Listen to Obituary

Vernita Harvey Blair, 89, entered her heavenly home on July 16 surrounded by her loving family.

Vernita was the daughter of Reverend Fred and Mary Abston Harvey of Albany, Kentucky and was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Luther E. “Ed” Blair and her brother, Rev. Forest Freeman Harvey (June).

Vernita was born at the parsonage in Frank, West Virginia and grew up in Albany, Kentucky, graduated from Clinton County High School and Lindsey Wilson College where she met her future husband, Ed Blair. After finishing college at Lindsey Wilson, Ed and Vernita married on December 24, 1956 and moved to Akron, Ohio where they both secured jobs at Firestone. They lived in Akron for 10 years where they started their family welcoming four of their six children. They relocated to Bowling Green in 1967 when Ed transferred with the new Firestone Textiles Plant and were blessed with two more children completing their family.

Vernita was a trained singer with a beautiful Alto voice. She accompanied Ed sharing Special Music in church and while traveling many road miles in the car with their family especially on vacations. Vernita will be remembered for singing while she washed dishes, mountains of laundry, and performing all the daily responsibilities of keeping an eight-member family home running efficiently and smoothly. She attended Lindsey Wilson on a teaching scholarship. Her classroom was the family home, and her six children were her students. She instructed her children with diligence and great expectations. Each child checked out the maximum number of books on regular trips to the library and craft stores. She was an excellent seamstress and taught each of her daughters to sew; their workmanship was judged and modeled through County and State Fairs and 4-H style shows. She served as a taxi driver shuttling each child to chosen activities and encouraged excellence and commitment. Vernita was a devoted student of God’s Word and demonstrated spiritual discipline. She was a member of the Nazarene Church and transferred her membership to Mount Olivet Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green.

Vernita is survived by her six children, Theresa Blair Davis (Harvey), Carolyn Blair Tarrence (Steve), Lisa Blair Poe, Alan Blair (Tina), Jimmy Blair, and Dawn Blair-Cherry (Lucas), ten grandchildren, Chris Davis (Amy), Ryan Davis, Brandon Kyle Davis (Melissa), Shawn Tarrence (Tiffany), Natalie Chiapusio (Scott), Bethany Amber LaRocco, Brooke Basham (Justin), Ben Blair (Amber), Dr. Madeline Blair, Kylie Blair, fifteen great-grandchildren, sisters in-law Joyce Flatt, Gayle Blair, Billie Stecker (Chuck) and several nieces and nephews.
