Kenneth Ray Spencer

Smiths Grove, Kentucky

Kenneth Ray Spencer of Smiths Grove left this world on April 5, 2024. He was born August 26, 1940 to Shelby Spencer and Margaret Honchul in Rogers, Ky by a midwife.

He is survived by his daughter, Janarae (Chris) Conway of Smiths Grove, a grandson, Spencer Conway of Smiths Grove, a brother, James (Becky) Spencer of Middletown, Oh, two sisters, Susan (Bruce) Davis of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Joyce Willadean Keating of Clay City, KY and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife of 57 years, Anna Jo Taulbee, a sister, Jean Smith and a brother Daymon Spencer. He grow up helping his father on the farm and in the timber industry of Eastern Kentucky using mules and horses. His father worked at the Bluegrass Army Depot in Madison County. He attended Berea High school where he played Football. The family moved back to Rogers his Junior year where attended and graduated from Wolfe County High School Class of ‘61. He played basketball his junior and senior year at Wolfe County High School. Following High school, he enlisted in the US Navy on September 11, 1961. He trained as an electrician before being assigned to the U.S.S Epperson stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. At discharge, his rank was EM3, Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. After returning home, he attended trade school to become a TV technician. He worked at O’Rear’s Hardware in Mt. Sterling as a TV repairman until he started working for the Kentucky Department of Transportation, Division of Toll Facilities. He retired from the state in August of 1999. He had many skills including farming, carpentry, electronic repair, electrician and caregiver. He always had a smile on his face. He was a storyteller and the keeper of the family history which he loved to share.  He was an avid UK fan.  

There will be a funeral service at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel.   Visitation will be 3:30-6:00 p.m.Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service.  Cremains will be entombed at Henry Clay Spencer Cemetery at Rogers, KY.

The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to American Legion Post 23, 208 Dishman Lane, Bowling Green, KY   42101
