Mr. Jay T. Patterson, 89, of Houston, Texas, affectionately known as JT or Granddaddy to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Born on April 23, 1935, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jay was the beloved son of John and Bernice Patterson. In August 1954, he married the love of his life, Aline Johnson Patterson, with whom he shared 67 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful life in Houston, Texas, where they raised their two sons.
Jay dedicated more than four decades to the F.W. Woolworth Company, beginning his journey in the stockroom of his hometown in Bowling Green. Through hard work and determination, he rose to the position of Manager, overseeing multiple stores throughout his career. His final assignment began in 1968 when he began managing one of the top 5 stores in the country in Downtown Houston where he remained for the next 30 years until he retired.
An active member of the Houston General Go Texan Committee for over 40 years, Jay held numerous leadership roles, always serving with dedication and passion. His commitment to this organization reflected his deep love for the Houston community and its traditions.
Jay was a man of passion and warmth, always finding joy in family time, boating, riding motorcycles, and his love for NASCAR—both watching and attending races. He had a remarkable ability to uplift and inspire those around him with his kindness, generosity, and fun-loving spirit. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jay cultivated a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering support. His leadership and mentorship left a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Aline; his parents, John and Bernice; and his son, Kevin Michael "Mike" Patterson. He is survived by his son, Bradley "Mark" Patterson; daughter-in-law, Robyne Patterson; grandchildren, Chad Patterson and his wife Kailey, along with their son, his great grandson, Memphis Patterson; Chelsea Patterson; and Josh Patterson—all of Houston, Texas. He also leaves behind many dear relatives and friends in Houston and Bowling Green.
Jay will be laid to rest beside his wife, Aline, in their birthplace of Bowling Green, Kentucky. A graveside service will be held at Boiling Springs Church of Christ Cemetery on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 10 a.m., with local arrangements by Hardy & Son Funeral Home, Bowling Green Chapel.
